Introduction to Navigation in the Alpine

A two day course that teaches participants the essential outdoor skills of navigation – the ability to travel through the bush, the hills and mountains using a map and compass plus an introduction to electronic navigation equipment. Day one is conducted in the classroom with some practical sessions around the village. Day two is a field day conducted on snow on mostly flat or low angle terrain.

What you will learn
– Navigate on & off track with a map & compass
– Understand the features, index and meanings of a of standard topographic map
– Plot and calculate bearings
– Plot a location on a map
– Learn Celestial Navigation
– Pacing / distance estimation
– Reading Map to ground
– Plan, prepare and walk an off track route using 6 digit UTM co-ordinates
– Conduct a resection aka finding your location when you are lost
– Reduced visibility navigation
– Understand the Global Positioning System and use GPS devices

Meet your instructors
Paddy Howlett is an ex military veteran that is a qualified navigation instructor with an aviation background. Paddy has also competed at World Series level as an adventure racer and National Level in Rogaining. In the alpine, Paddy is a national level biathlete and cross country ski enthusiast. His latest adventure in 2023, racing a tandem canoe 1600km from Canada to Alaska through some of the remotest wilderness in the world tested his map building and navigation skills to the limits.

Kelly van den Berg is an alpine guide, outdoor educator and expedition medic that has participated in teams on many wilderness adventures both here and overseas in many varied environments from the deserts of the Sahara to alpine ascents. Kelly was Paddy’s race partner and navigator for the Yukon 1000 expedition race in 2023.
